Taking the practice of medicine out of the caring hands of familiar professionals and handing it over to a faceless new committee called a Federal Health Board or Independent Health Coverage Council will lower the quality of my health care. According to former HHS nominee Tom Daschle, the health board's recommendations "would have teeth" and regulate private insurance plans operating in a new, mandatory national health insurance exchange. To control costs, this Council could deny treatments recommended by my doctor if the Council deems them too expensive or if I'm too old to receive the doctor’s recommended treatment. In other countries like England where health councils have been tried, the boards have limited patient access to doctor-recommended treatments for Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Alzheimer's Disease, and Leukemia just to name a few. There would be no recourse for patients like me to appeal denied treatments since the Council's members would be appointed like judges, deliberations would be conducted in secret, and the Council would remain insulated from accountability for arbitrary decisions.     Please personalize your letter for greater impact!
